Your weekly spark
Money Moves with Waleed Elgindy
Roundup of open jobs across the community
π₯ And now, for your weekly spark.
Uncomfortable.
Kai Cenat has spent years building one of the biggest platforms in streaming. But this fall, he stepped onto a very different stage.
After taking a nine-month break from streaming, Kai debuted VIVET, his own fashion label, during New York Fashion Week. He didn't just put his name on a collection. He traveled to Italy to learn about textiles, garment construction, pattern cutting, and leatherwork, putting himself in the position of a beginner in an entirely new industry.
What makes the move stand out isn't just that a successful streamer launched a fashion brand. It's that he was willing to step away from what he already knew and give himself room to become something else.
There's a lesson here for anyone who's built a career, business, or reputation around being good at one particular thing. Sometimes the very thing that makes you successful can become the thing that keeps you in place. People know what to expect from you, and you can spend years getting better at something without asking whether it's still what you want to build.
Growth sometimes means questioning the identity we've built around our work and considering what else weβre capable of achieving.
That's part of what stood out to me in this week's Money Moves conversation with Waleed Elgindy, who leads Global Brand Marketing at Workiva.
Waleed built his career by saying yes to opportunities that stretched him, from management consulting to agency work across industries and markets. But he shared something else: early on, he was mostly doing what other people asked of him. It took time to discover what truly energized him: building brands, businesses, and defining new categories. Once he did, he became more intentional about what he said yes to.
It's one thing to be willing to take a risk. It's another to know which risks are moving you closer to the life and work you actually want.
And the people around us can help us figure that out.
A key element in the coverage of Kai's VIVET debut was the spirit of community surrounding the project. People from his world weren't just watching from the sidelines. They were part of the moment. Kai has said he wants his journey to show others in his community what's possible when they step outside the expectations placed on them.
Waleed has his own version of that support system. He pressure-tests decisions with mentors and peers who challenge his blind spots. The right people don't just cheer us on. They challenge us, share what they've learned, and sometimes see potential in us before we see it ourselves.
That's what community can do. It doesn't just celebrate who we are today. At its best, it helps us imagine who we could become tomorrow. The people we build with can shape not only what we accomplish, but what we believe we could even attempt.
ππ½ Growth may ask you to get uncomfortable. The right community can help you take that next step.
π The Check-In
A few questions I'm asking myself this week:
ππ½ What am I known for, and is it still what I want to be known for? Your reputation can open doors, but it shouldn't become a ceiling.
ππ½ Where do I need to become a beginner again? What skill, idea, or opportunity have you put off because you don't yet know how to do it?
ππ½ Who challenges me to think beyond what I'm good at already? Make room for people who see your potential beyond your current role, title, or track record.
Growth doesn't always mean climbing higher on the same ladder. Sometimes it means realizing there's another one worth building. And sometimes it takes the right people to help you see it.
π₯ Don't let the version of you that got you here limit the version of you that comes next.
This week, read Waleed's Money Moves interview for more on the career decisions, personal principles, and people that have helped shape his path.
