“All that you touch you change. All that you change changes you.” – Octavia Butler

Ever feel like you’re beating a drum that no one else can hear?

It might be when you feel unappreciated during a series of job interviews, or it might be when you feel unheard while trying to effect change at work. I’ve definitely felt a sense of loss in these situations.

Sometimes that feeling can be a springboard toward the next win though. The joy of winning is deeper when you understand the pain of losing.

When I wrote about finding and feeling joy last week, one of the four ways to get there included reminding myself of my own power, along with how I can effect change.

This week, I’m taking inspiration from Octavia Butler, the pioneering writer whose work brought visibility to issues affecting our communities, including racial equality, women’s rights, and climate change.

Not only did Butler’s approach aim to help people fully feel, it also reflected the need to be consistent in your goals – the need to keep beating your drum.

So, how are we supposed to do that, in the face of all the priorities in our world?

One way that I’m approaching it is by tapping the 369 manifestation method. I’m using it to stay consistent and to reduce the volatility in ups and downs.

More ups and fewer downs? Sign me up.

The 369 manifestation method

It’s about consistently focusing on your goals. Here’s how it works.

👉🏽 Determine three personal or professional goals – something you can envision for your future as having already been achieved.

👉🏽 Set six reminder moments throughout the day – simple alarms at various times.

👉🏽 Repeat each goal nine times – in your mind, on your phone or laptop, or written down, whatever way works for you.

It may sound excessive, but it’s based on the science of engaging our reticular activating system (RAS), the part of our brains that helps to keep us focused and filters out doubt. It helps us to automate behavior, so we can use less energy and be more consistent.

It can help to see opportunities by seeing ourselves in a future reality. Isn’t that why we set goals at all?

Every step gets us a step closer to our future reality. The more consistent we are, the closer we get. And the beat goes on.
