When was the last time you caused some trouble?
👀 I’m not talking about that time you inadvertently said the wrong thing over Thanksgiving dinner – I’m talking about the type of trouble that John Lewis referred to as “good trouble”.
Lewis’ philosophy recognized that progress through activism can look different than you might expect at first. It acknowledges that real, positive, lasting change often requires disruption.
In last week’s newsletter, when I dared you to care as the end of the year approaches, it was a reminder to preserve some energy because so many of us feel as though we’re sprinting toward the finish line.
That energy is what you’ll need not only to hit your goals for the year end, but you’ll also need it to map out what the year ahead could look like. Without question, it will be a year of disruption.
The good news is that with your energy recharged, you’ll be better positioned to meet that disruption head on and make some trouble – that is, challenge the status quo – to help drive real change.
That change might be at work on your own team, it may be in the way you approach your own work, or it may be how you manage your own health and well-being on a day-to-day basis. It may even be about how you define well-being in the first place.
That change may have a meaningful impact on you, and it may spread that impact to everyone and everything you interact with as the year goes on. It might be the small waterdrops that continue to ripple and spread far and wide.
👉🏽 You get to decide what you’ll challenge and how you’ll do it. You get to decide what you’ll disrupt – how you’ll make trouble that moves you forward, closer to your goals.
And, like the featured leaders, creators, and culture-makers in this week’s Need to Know, you get to decide how far it’ll take you and how you’ll set the tone for what comes next.
