When I was a kid, I had a habit of talking a lot. In fact, thanks to this – and to my kindergarten teacher – I learned the word “chatterbox” at an early age.

In learning it, I also learned that holding that title wasn’t a positive thing. I was often told not to say what I wanted to say, and there were plenty of times I was told to lower my voice.

When we’re young, it can sometimes feel as though our voices are the most important, but when we’re told to suppress them, it sends a message that lasts: Keep your voice down, and you’ll stay out of trouble.

Last week, as I wrote about what it looks like to be in it to win it, defining our wins was a key part of this.

👉🏽 Defining what trouble means has been a key part of understanding how and when to use my voice.

As many of us with purpose-led values recognize the demographic shifts happening around us – by 2045, the white US population will make up the minority, with increasingly diverse and open cultural expectations by generation – it’s worth remembering that collectively we are already the majority.

When it comes to values and vision for the future, many of us from historically excluded backgrounds are already aligned. It’s not just about identity – it’s about impact.

Now is the time to make sure we’re building bridges, not just by what we look like or where we’ve come from, but by where we’re looking to go.

Let’s face it – some might say we’re already in trouble. The events of the past week in our news cycle are stark reminders of the power of solidarity and how it can be used to achieve goals – whether it’s for your side or another, whether supporting your views or the polar opposite.

👉🏽 Here’s the thing about trouble though. Because it’s relative, we can define how we see it and how much we let it suppress our voices.

It’s infinitely easier to accept it and retreat to rest. It’s easier to tune out the noise. But what if instead of avoiding it, you move closer toward it? What if you drown out the noise with the power of your own sound?

I’m not talking about yelling over others and mirroring negative behaviors. I’m talking about the type of sound that pierces through the noise, like a siren song.

What if you raise your voice not by yelling into a void, but by finding other voices that compliment yours – by aligning with the people whose values strengthen our collective voices, so that we pierce through the noise together?

That’s what solidarity and community look like. That’s what moves us forward in spite of the trouble we might believe we’re facing.

👉🏽 So, the question that remains is this:  Are you ready to raise your voice?
