Community is how culture survives long enough to become inheritance.
I’ve been thinking about how different conversations about heritage months have felt recently, compared to five years ago.
Not just visible. More lived-in, having been through it.
More people speaking from cultural specificity without pausing to translate themselves first. More language, references, humor, aesthetics, and experiences showing up naturally instead of being framed as educational moments for everyone else in the room.
During AANHPI Heritage Month, you can see that same shift happening across fashion, film, music, food, sports, media, and marketing. As texture, rather than just a trend.
That distinction matters, because representation is one thing. Inheritance is another.
Representation says: “we finally made it into the room.” Inheritance changes what the room sounds like after we enter it.
For a long time, many of us from immigrant households and more broadly the rising majority learned to approach culture carefully. Make it legible and accessible. Don’t make people uncomfortable. Translate before expressing.
But increasingly, the leaders, brands, and communities building the deepest resonance right now are doing something different. They’re not treating culture as a seasonal campaign layer or identity performance. They’re building ecosystems where culture shapes the actual experience — the language, relationships, references, values, trust dynamics, and creative instincts underneath the work itself.
That’s why some things feel recognizable immediately, while others feel strategically assembled. One is participating in community, while the other is still just visiting it.
You can usually feel the difference immediately. For instance, Pinterest has quietly become one of the more culturally intelligent platforms, understanding that people don’t just consume culture — they collect it, save it, reinterpret it, and pass it forward.
The platform’s trend ecosystem works because it observes how communities shape taste, memory, aspiration, and identity over time. That’s a very different approach than treating culture like a seasonal activation.
👉🏽 And honestly, a lot of brand builders still underestimates this.
It’s not just what people buy. It’s shaping how people gather, celebrate, trust, communicate, heal, spend, recommend, and imagine what’s possible for themselves and their families.
That’s why community matters so much right now. Because community is what carries culture forward after the campaign ends.
Michael Roca recently touched on this in his interview with Wellth.
Beyond the career and financial advice was a deep truth: the people who build durable success rarely do it alone. They inherit knowledge, relationships, perspective, and emotional support through community long before those things become visible externally.
📌 The INHERIT Framework
If community determines what survives long enough to become inheritance, then these are the questions worth asking.
I: Identity
Do people actually recognize themselves in this, or are they being flattened into audience segments?
N: Narrative
Who gets to shape the story instead of simply appearing inside it?
H: Humanity
Does this feel lived-in and socially real, or overly polished and strategically optimized?
E: Ecosystem
Are you creating only isolated moments, or actual relationships and rituals that compound over time?
R: Reciprocity
Community is not extraction. Are people receiving value alongside the value they help create?
I: Imagination
The strongest cultural work expands possibility, not just visibility.
T: Trust
Without trust, representation collapses into performance.
All of this is part of why I’ve been investing more intentionally into the conversations I’m having on YouTube too.
Nuance requires more than surface-level takes. There are discussions on identity, ambition, and cultural fluency that connect directly to the idea of carrying forward who you are while still evolving how you lead and build.
