In Community #4: How does content bias affect our communities?

This week, we dive into something many of us have heard about but may not know the full data behind:  bias in content and media.

As the influence of media continues to drive how we see ourselves and each other – whether through social media networks, TikTok or YouTube, or legacy news networks – the responsibility we all have behind the scenes to ensure that the right voices are being heard and represented continues to grow.

This builds on my note from last week, where I emphasized how critical it is to make sure voices who aren’t typically heard get amplified, especially to showcase what BIPOC are experiencing across intersections.

How our communities are perceived matters. The way the headline on your content is written, the words and images used in stories that represent us, and the people behind the scenes all matter.

Ask yourself – and ask your leaders – what are we doing differently to make sure we're reducing bias in the tools and systems we apply every day? How is this influencing the perception of our communities?

After all, if perception is reality, what's the reality we're helping to build?

Artificial Intelligence: Friend or foe?

AI and machine-learning technology has transformed the way we get things done. But the potential for bias applied at scale should be on everyone’s radar as they consider the ways that their marketing or content teams can use these tools.
