“It’s helpful to think of fear and nerves as an outfit you wear. Don’t try to avoid these feelings altogether; rather, get comfortable with taking the outfit off when it’s time to execute.” – Lilly Singh
Ever felt yourself going round and round in circles over a decision?
Maybe it was something seemingly easy that felt hard all of a sudden. Or maybe it was something hard that you wished could be easier.
Something that made moving in a new direction scary.
Last week, when I wrote about missing the biggest trust-building moment of the year, the reality is that this continues to happen in large part because of one thing: fear.
The fear that leaders have when making decisions. The fear that teams take on when they’re led by that example. The fear that brands and businesses collectively harbor that keeps them from moving forward.
👉🏽 What if we all harnessed – instead of harbored – those feelings?
Fear has a knack for dressing up as logic. It convinces us to delay, perfect, or pause until everything feels ready.
Hey there 👋🏽
In Community isn’t funded by big media. It’s powered by connection, culture, and people like you.
If this space helps you think differently or provides a boost of positive energy each week, consider becoming a supporting subscriber.
The truth is that readiness is often a feeling you gain after a leap forward, not before it.
Fear reflects what matters to you. Nerves reflect what you care about. Together, they can feel like a weakness – but what if you viewed them as an outfit?
What would shift for us all if we treated fear and nerves as an outfit – one that we wear when we prepare, rehearse, and build, but then shed piece by piece when it’s time to show up?
What if we acknowledged the fear we feel, and instead of letting it paralyze us from taking a leap, we took the leap anyway? What if we did it scared?
We’d still land on the other side.
This week, your challenge is simple: Do one thing scared – safely, but scared. Try one thing imperfectly.
Give yourself a shot at it before you’re fully ready.
Because there might not be a moment where the fear is fully shed. There might not be a time that feels perfect.
And there might never be a better time than now.
Is there something you or someone in your life has been delaying because of fear? Let me know – or forward ♻️ this to them.
Let’s build some collective courage.
