In Community #9: No lies detected (ALT: A Year in view)

I won’t lie. It’s been a rough year.

Looking farther back, it’s been nearly four years since a global pandemic irrevocably shifted the perspectives and priorities of so many of us. We’ve faced a reckoning related to how we view the world around us, how we think about the work we do, and how we see ourselves.

Last week, I shared some ways to find and sustain energy. It’s natural to feel unmotivated and to focus on the negatives of what’s happening in the world. But if 2020 was about reflection, 2021 was about reconnection, and 2022 was about acceleration, then 2023 has been about resilience amid continued challenges economically, emotionally, socially, and beyond.

Resilience to help chart a course that’ll take us where we need to go – both at home and at work. There’s no better time than now to not only reset and recharge for the year ahead but to recommit to investing in ourselves. And we can’t do that if we don’t see what could be ahead of us – we can’t do that without a vision for ourselves. Or without seeing ourselves and each other.

With that in mind, as I wrap the year with a deeply felt “Bye, see ya never!” to 2023 and the last In Community newsletter before January, I’m taking this opportunity to share some bright spots. We’ve seen wins across industries: BIPOC leaders stepping into influential roles at large companies; a founder/CEO defying the odds (being among the few Black, Asian American women to lead a successful investor-backed startup); the continued rise of wellbeing as a core leadership value; and having Gen Z show us what progress really looks like.

Here’s to the year ahead! 🚀
